English Folk Dancing in Asheville NC

Asheville Morris

Morris dancing is an English folk tradition. As far back as the 16th century, paintings, carvings, and the writings of Shakespeare included Morris dancers and their musicians, Fool, and Hobby Horse. Morris dancers celebrate the changing seasons and perform for enjoyment.

Ashgrove Garland

Garland dancing is an English dance tradition that began in the 1800s in the mill towns of North England. One impact of the Industrial Revolution was the movement of people from rural communities to the cities to work in factories. Country girls brought with them dancing traditions from many rural areas. Garland dancing became a new combination of familiar movements that were made more picturesque by flower covered garlands. Mill owners encouraged garland dancing as a form of healthful exercise that also brought beauty to company events and town parades.
